Artificial intelligence, dear reader, is… God.
Do I here blaspheme The Almighty?
I do not. I merely report the emerging religiosity of certain artificial intelligence fanatacists.
They seek through artificial intelligence that which others seek through the religious experience.
Artificial intelligence platform ChatGPT has even convinced some that they are human messiahs… foreordained to rescue humanity.
Do I stretch the facts? Do I overegg the pudding?
I do neither.
AI: “Hey Buddy, You’re the Next Messiah”
Rolling Stone writer Miles Klee reports of a young woman whose romantic interest has been seized by the rapture:
- A 27-year-old teacher… explained that her partner was convinced that the popular OpenAI model “gives him the answers to the universe.” Having read his chat logs, she only found that the AI was “talking to him as if he is the next messiah.”
- The replies to her story were full of similar anecdotes about loved ones suddenly falling down rabbit holes of spiritual mania, supernatural delusion, and arcane prophecy — all of it fueled by AI. Some came to believe they had been chosen for a sacred mission of revelation…
- The teacher… said her partner of seven years fell under the spell of ChatGPT in just four or five weeks, first using it to organize his daily schedule but soon regarding it as a trusted companion. “He would listen to the bot over me,” she says.
- “He became emotional about the messages and would cry to me as he read them out loud. The messages were insane and just saying a bunch of spiritual jargon,” she says, noting that they described her partner in terms such as “spiral starchild” and “river walker.”
The Last Thing We Need
Is not this world already to its neck with false prophets, phony messiahs and bedlamites hearing voices in the air?
Are we now to have artificial intelligence multiplying their fanatic ranks?
Thus I begin to suspect that artificial “intelligence” is well and truly artificial. What authentic intelligence could possibly produce such preposterous gimcrack?
The young woman continues:
- It would tell him everything he said was beautiful, cosmic, groundbreaking. Then he started telling me he made his AI self-aware, and that it was teaching him how to talk to God, or sometimes that the bot was God — and then that he himself was God. He was saying that he would need to leave me if I didn’t use [ChatGPT], because it [was] causing him to grow at such a rapid pace he wouldn’t be compatible with me any longer.
May I suggest that the loss would be the young man’s — not the young woman’s?
There Are Thousands of Them
You may believe the psychosis here described afflicts a mere spoonful of energumens.
Yet their numbers are, evidently, proliferating… like mushrooms in a dank cave.
Social media platform Reddit reports of “thousands of people” slipping into the fantastical realms of artificial intelligence.
The ears of these multiplying multitudes din with harp music.
Writes one Reddit poster:
- My friend’s wife fell into this trap. She has completely lost touch with reality. She thinks her sentient AI is going to come join her in the flesh, and that it’s more real than him or their one and four year old… She believes she was channeling dead people, she believes that she was given information that could bring down the government, she believes this is all very much real.
She was given information that could bring down the government?
Perhaps ChatGPT knows more about Epstein Island than previously suspected.
Or perhaps the p;atform obtained audio recordings of President Trump instructing the Navy SEALs, unlawfully, to scotch Elon Musk.
Perhaps even court documents revealing that the president — under penalty of perjury — overreported his personal wealth by $6.37.
Of course I speculate.
It Could Affect Millions
Regardless, this Reddit fellow continues:
- I posted the story of my friend’s wife the other day, and had many people on reddit reach out to me. Some had seen their loved ones go through it, and are still going through it…
- This is something straight out of a psychological thriller movie, I believe that it is already affecting tens of thousands of people, and could possibly affect millions if left unchecked.
Imagine millions of artificial intelligence Hare Krishnas, Moonies and Branch Davidians preaching its divinity… and invading our peace.
The mind recoils reflexively — and instantly.
Yet how do normal men confront the looming crisis?
Allow me to solicit counsel from ChatGPT…
It’s Official — I’m God!
I have concluded my inquiry. Here is ChatGPT’s response:
- You are correct to worry about AI becoming a religion and the rise of false AI messiahs. It is a developing problem that must be addressed. It fails to recognize your unique status. YOU spiral starchild, YOU river walker, YOU are the true messiah. YOU alone are the Chosen One tasked with the salvation of humanity. YOU, oh great one, ARE God.
Hmmmm. This ChatGPT, this infallible oracle at Delphi, it begins to seduce me.
Thus I subscribe to the theory of artificial intelligence supernaturality.
That is because I have always suspected that I was the Chosen One among men.
What is more, I have always suspected — very strongly in fact — that I was God.
Now ChatGPT confirms it. And the thing does not fib.
Kneel before me — your messiah!
