Dear Reader,
Invoke the term “deep state” in polite company.
You will likely be mocked, scolded and ridiculed for trafficking in “conspiracy theories.”
You will be denounced as an agent of Satan — or worse, of Donald John Trump.
Yet now… even The Atlantic magazine concedes its existence. A mere two days ago the publication issued an article under this heading:
“There Really Is a Deep State.” From which:
- The phrase deep state might trigger images of tinfoil hats. After all, Trump has spent much of the past eight years falsely claiming that Democratic bureaucrats are unfairly persecuting him. But operating within the federal… agencies is an actual deep state…
An actual deep state!
Don’t Worry, the Deep State Is Your Friend
The very expression “deep state” radiates sinister overtones.
It suggests malicious fellows operating in shadow… in subversive concert… acting in their own interests rather than the nation’s.
Yet have another guess, argues The Atlantic. It claims the deep state is your indispensable ally, your righteous champion.
Its sole concern is the common good. And it is crewed by a giant mob of saints.
Consider, for example, the pandemic:
- Whether you know it or not, you’ve likely seen this deep state in action. It was the reason Trump’s preferred treatment for COVID during the early phases of the pandemic, hydroxychloroquine, was not flooding pharmacies. And it was why COVID vaccines were not rushed out before the 2020 presidential election. Both of those efforts were stopped by civil servants, despite overt pressure from Trump and officials in his administration.
- Public-health officials didn’t buck Trump to sabotage him. They did so because both measures were scientifically unsolid. Vaccines weren’t authorized before the election because FDA officials knew that they had to wait at least two months after the clinical trials were completed to make sure the vaccines didn’t cause dangerous side effects. And the FDA blocked use of hydroxychloroquine for treating COVID because of the drug’s unproven efficacy and spotty safety record.
The Deep State Distrusts the People
These are — after all — “experts.” And they lack all bias, all passion, all ambition.
The average citizen must yield to their superior sagacity.
If he does not then you have chaos and old night on your hands.
You have for example the initial election of Donald Trump. You have for example the second election of Donald Trump.
Against these evils the deep state is arrayed… and its philosopher-kings are consecrated to the common good.
They “know best.” Yet do they?
Shut Up!
The experts told us that lockups were necessary, that facial masks performed gorgeously, that the vaccines were safe and effective and that hydroxychloroquine and ivermectin were not.
Anyone who rose to challenge these claims was labeled the common enemy of mankind.
If he tried to talk the “social media” outlets — in strict collaboration with federal authorities — placed tape upon his mouth.
This fiend was shoveling out “misinformation” and “disinformation.”
If he held a doctoral degree in epidemiology or related field? If he claimed several decades of relevant experience that informed his dissent?
If he occupied a perch at such a learned institution as Yale University or Stanford University?
If he could cite reams of scientifically valid data that fortified his claims?
It made no nevermind. The masking tape went across his mouth.
Yet who has time vindicated — the official experts — or the officially denounced experts?
It Was All Junk Science
Last October The New York Intelligencer conceded that:
- In the U.S. and the U.K. especially, lockdowns went from being regarded as something that only an authoritarian government would attempt to an example of “following the science.”
- But there was never any science behind lockdowns — not a single study had ever been undertaken to measure their efficacy in stopping a pandemic. When you got right down to it, lockdowns were little more than a giant experiment.
And as the article itself concedes, that experiment failed.
Chapter, verse, line, letter, the article lists the failings.
Yet the social media organizations, the primary media outlets and the regulatory authorities of the United States government said it worked grandly.
“I Was Wrong”
Next I summon Newsweek to the witness stand. Last January it cited a medical student and researcher.
This fellow conceded that:
- As a medical student and researcher, I staunchly supported the efforts of the public health authorities when it came to COVID-19. I believed that the authorities responded to the largest public health crisis of our lives with compassion, diligence and scientific expertise. I was with them when they called for lockdowns, vaccines and boosters.
- I was wrong. We in the scientific community were wrong. And it cost lives.
- I can see now that the scientific community from the CDC to the WHO to the FDA and their representatives repeatedly overstated the evidence and misled the public about its own views and policies, including on natural versus artificial immunity, school closures and disease transmission, aerosol spread, mask mandates and vaccine effectiveness and safety, especially among the young.
- All of these were scientific mistakes at the time, not in hindsight. Amazingly, some of these obfuscations continue to the present day.
There you have your admission of guilt. Under withering cross-examination the witness continues:
- But perhaps more important than any individual error was how inherently flawed the overall approach of the scientific community was, and continues to be. It was flawed in a way that undermined its efficacy and resulted in thousands if not millions of preventable deaths…
- We created policy based on our preferences, then justified it using data. And then we portrayed those opposing our efforts as misguided, ignorant, selfish and evil. We made science a team sport, and in so doing, we made it no longer science. It became us versus them…
Scientific Malpractice
Do not forget — this man was initially in step with the “experts.” More yet:
- When strong scientific voices like world-renowned Stanford professors John Ioannidis, Jay Bhattacharya and Scott Atlas… sounded the alarm… they faced severe censure by relentless mobs of critics and detractors in the scientific community — often not on the basis of fact but solely on the basis of differences in scientific opinion…
- Labeling this speech “misinformation” and blaming it on “scientific illiteracy” and “ignorance,” the government conspired with Big Tech to aggressively suppress it, erasing the valid political concerns of the government’s opponents.
The witness may step down. And the prosecution rests its open-and-shut case.
Why should the American public hold trust in such experts? Why should the American public hold trust in the deep state?
The Atlantic magazine sobs about America’s vanishing faith in experts and the institutions they infest.
Yet if the American people no longer trust the experts… they need but stare into a very clear mirror.
They have none to blame but themselves.

Brian Maher
