The Kamala Harris Situation Is FUBAR

It’s Worse Than Previously Thought

Hello Patriot,

As the adage says, everything old is new again.

In the two weeks since the debate, there has been a lot of commotion in the political world, especially in the Democratic Party.

And after last night, things will only intensify.

If you missed the events of the day, Joe Biden called the Ukrainian politician Volodymyr Zelensky “President Putin.” And shortly after that, he called Kamala Harris “Trump.”

You can see Zelensky’s reaction below.

When I sat down to write this piece, I realized it would be a good time to revisit an article from October 2020.

Excerpts below, followed by an update.

Enjoy.

“The Cambridge Dictionary defines FUBAR as:

  • fubar
  • adjective
  • U.S. slang (also FUBAR)
  • uk
  • /ˈfuː.bɑːr/ us
  • /ˈfuː.bɑːr/

extremely bad or certain to fail or be defeated or destroyed. Fubar is short for F****d Up Beyond All Recognition:

Sometimes, “Repair” is substituted for “Recognition.” This fun phrase is slang that originated from the U.S. Army in World War II.

And this acronym fits the Kamala Harris situation perfectly.

Yesterday, I told you about these tweets from Frank Luntz:

“My undecided voters think Mike Pence is more professional, but that he looks tired. They think Kamala Harris is more passionate, but her reaction-faces are really bothering people. #VPDebate”

And:

“I might get #cancelled for this, but my undecided focus group doesn’t like how Kamala Harris interacts with her opponent. We saw this in the Dem debates – she is applauded for her knowledge, but they just don’t like her “condescending reactions.” #VPDebate”

Frank’s respondents were kind. After having a day to dig into the focus groups from last night, there are some startling comments if you are the Biden-Harris team.

“Does she always sound like this? And does she always make those expressions?”

“Is she going to make those faces with world leaders who say something she doesn’t like?”

“She’s acting like my teenager when I’m telling her she can’t do something.”

And one subtle but potentially impactful moment:

“Why did she close her eyes when she said she was of faith?”

When asked for one word, some responses were:

  • Smug
  • Condescending
  • Not authentic
  • Immature / not ready
  • Entitled.

What we now have is a consistent theme with Harris and voters. In 2019, the Democratic primary voters did not take to her, and now the general election voters are not either.

There is an old joke about marriage advice that says:

“Do you want to be right, or do you want to be happy?”

I’ve used it throughout my career with the twist of:

“Do you want to force your opinion on everyone, or do you want to win?”

The powers in the Democratic party should have considered this concept before selecting Kamala as the V.P. on the Biden ticket.

Senator Harris checks off a lot of boxes. She is pretty, and she’s smart; however, she has a physically weak voice and bad, bad, bad body language that betrays any message she tries to deliver.

The weirdest part of it is that this isn’t new information. By October of 2019, Senator Harris had fallen to single-digit poll numbers in her own state, and by December, she had dropped out of the Democratic primary.

But instead of following that wisdom, they went with a progressive candidate who checked off intangible boxes. In doing so, they created a ticket that gets very few people excited.

It’s a major “what were they thinking” moment.

Kamala doesn’t really do anything for the base. Anyone predisposed to like her would have liked other candidates for the same and different reasons.

After Wednesday night, now we know she doesn’t do anything to move the needle for the moderate and swing voters. Which, as one of the two most liberal Senators in the country, how could she?…

Before, the situation seemed tenuous, to say the least. Now, it may genuinely be fudged up beyond all repair.”

========================

Hopping back to 2024, not much has changed with Harris’s public perception, but what has changed is her position in this campaign.

And the more Biden’s mask is peeled back, the more her situation transforms.

Just yesterday, the New York Times ran an article titled,

“The Embattled Biden Campaign Tests Kamala Harris’s Strength vs. Trump”

And that is the paper of note for the left.

Make no mistake—this leak of internal polling efforts was intentional and part of a larger plan. We’ve reached a moment in time when something has to happen.

One survey group, Emerson, went so far as to test Trump head-to-head with ten different candidates. They dove so deep that they included Al Gore on the questionnaire.

Considering the picture as a whole, we would all be well served to remember that: “a wounded animal is the most dangerous.”

A note on the next article. I can hop into some very wonky polling breakdown, but I want to be sure that’s not too in the weeds for you. So, just send me a note at C.K. Chrystal (@thecapitolgains) / X and let me know.

Have a great weekend,

C.K. Chrystal
